Some cars tell a story. This tornad red Volkswagen Golf Mk2 CL perhaps does so even more because of what we don’t know. How is it possible this car has been barely used. Im affraid we will never know its story.
How is it possible that a 1991 Golf Mk2 has covered only 5,800 kilometres? No one knows the exact story. What we do know is that this Golf was first registered on 26 July 1991 in Kassel, Germany, to a 39-year-old woman. In the prime of her life, yet the car was barely used. On 26 August 2003, the Golf was taken off the road and disappeared from public view.
Years later, this remarkable Golf was discovered by a collector, who recommissioned the car for road use. Among other things, the timing belt, battery and all fluids were replaced. Even after that, the car was hardly driven.
And you can see it.
You can feel it.
You can even smell it.
This Golf looks like new, drives like new and smells like new.
This is driving as it was once intended: pure, simple and relaxed. No screens, no warning chimes, no driver assistance systems constantly demanding your attention. Just a steering wheel, a gear lever and a few simple switches for the lights and windscreen wipers. Honestly, that is all you need for enjoyable and carefree motoring.
And if you would like some music along the way, the original radio is still there — complete with cassette player.
Under the bonnet sits the charming 1.3-litre fuel-injected engine, perhaps the perfect engine for the Mk2: reliable, smooth and wonderfully analogue. This Golf is also equipped with:
- Auxiliary driving lights
- Front fog lights
- Rear window wiper
Nothing more is needed to travel from A to B with a smile on your face.
The Volkswagen Golf Mk2 is regarded by many as the best Golf ever built: solid, timeless and uncomplicated. And especially in today’s world of endless distractions and digital dashboards, you begin to appreciate a car like this more and more.
For the asking price, you are essentially buying a brand-new car from 1991 — except this one is only becoming rarer and more valuable with time.
