A true classic with character and history. This Volkswagen Type 181, known around the world under various names—“Thing” in the U.S., “Trekker” in the UK, and “Kübel” in Europe—is a rare civilian model, built for the private market and not a military conversion.
What makes this particular 181 especially remarkable is its origin: it served as the demonstration vehicle for Pon Nederland, the renowned Dutch importer also credited with the original concept behind the iconic VW Bus. After its demo period, the car was passed on to Pon’s head salesman, who took it to his holiday home in Italy. Due to local bureaucracy, the vehicle was never officially registered there.
In the 1990s, the car was discovered by a vacationer who recognized its value and immediately purchased it. Once back in the Netherlands, it received a fresh coat of paint, a rebuilt original engine, and has since been preserved in exceptionally good condition.
